FAQ's
- What states are now eligible for the Biotechnology Endorsement in 2010?
For growers planting qualifying hybrids containing Monsanto technology, the Biotechnology Endorsement (BE) is available for irrigated and non-irrigated corn for grain acres in Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin acres. Only SmartStax technologies by Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences and Monsanto triple-stack technologies qualify in Colorado.
- Which Monsanto products are approved for the BE ?
All Monsanto hybrids containing Genuity™ SmartStax™, Genuity™ VT Triple PRO™, YieldGard VT Triple, or YieldGard Plus with Roundup Ready Corn 2 technologies. These hybrids are available from more than 250 seed companies.
- Which types of insurance policies qualify?
An Actual Production History (APH), Crop Revenue Coverage (CRC) or Revenue Assurance (RA) plan insurance that provides coverage for corn for grain on eligible acres qualifies for the BE.
- Which insurance companies will offer the 2010 BE?
All approved insurance providers and their representing agents will have the opportunity to offer the BE as part of the Biotechnology Endorsement.
- What Monsanto traits and seeds do I plant to qualify?
To be eligible for the premium discount, farmers must plant at least 75 percent of their corn for grain acres on an insured unit basis including replanted acres to corn hybrids containing Genuity™ SmartStax™, Genuity™ VT Triple PRO™, YieldGard VT Triple or YieldGard Plus with Roundup Ready® Corn 2 technologies. Participation in BE does not replace the importance of farmers respecting the EPA-mandated refuge requirements.
- How and when do I sign up?
Farmers should speak with their insurance representatives regarding information and details related to signup and qualifications. The final required documentation will be due at the time they provide their acreage reporting information.
- How much is the discount?
While there are a number of variables that are farmer-specific, the average total cost of a policy premium for the 2009 BE pilot was reduced by more than $4.25 per acre on insured acres purchasing APH, CRC or RA policies. It is expected that this will be similar in 2010 for both irrigated and non-irrigated acres.

- Why did Monsanto do this?
As a company 100 percent focused on agriculture, Monsanto has spent two years working on behalf of the American farmer to develop what is now the Biotech Endorsement.
The development of the BE by Monsanto supports Monsanto’s commitment to the American farmer to deliver biotechnology and products that consistently provides reduced risk, better yields and more value.
